Girl's Bathing Suit

1950s (made), 1950s (designed and made)
Artist/Maker

Girl's yellow ruched one-piece bathing costume,1950s. The bathing suit consists of a short bodice which rises to a V at the neckline with two ties attached. There is a thick smocked waistband and the bottom half of the suit is entirely ruched and forms knickers at the bottom. The fastening is at the back and follows on from the two ties at the top of the bodice to criss-cross on the back. The back is scooped out with some more smocking forming the top.

This bathing costume is part of larger gift given to the Museum by Daphne Pearce who wore the clothes as a young girl growing up in the Northern suburbs of London. The clothes are all in pristine condition and were worn from the 1950s to 1960s and show a range from baby wear to pre-teen years, approximately 12. This collection typifies the clothing of the period and clothing labels and styles of the middle classes.

There are two labels stitched into the back of the bodice, one of top of the other. The one of the bottom seems to read 'PNITRITE SWIMWEAR' and the one on the top reads 'MAIDS'. They are both embroidered in red thread.
