Object history
From the treasury of the Cathedral of the Virgin of the Pillar, Zaragoza. One of a group of jewels purchased by the Museum in 1870, when the Cathedral authorities sold off treasures presented to the shrine of the Virgin in order to complete their building programme.
The dating of this jewel and of the similar jewel, 334-1870, is discussed in an article of the first importance by Dr Carolina Naya Franco (see references). She identifies this jewel, 336-1870, in inventories of 1742 and of 1816-21, thus establishing that it is not a nineteenth-century neo-Renaissance jewel.
