Al Frueh (1880-1968) was an American cartoonist and caricaturist for The New Yorker magazine from 1925 to 1962. This print forms part of a portfolio of caricatures, Stage Folk: A Book of Caricatures by Frueh, published by Lieber & Lewis in 1922. It was exhibited at the Theatre Museum in Theatre Caricatures by Al Frueh: West End Meets Broadway, in 1990.
This print shows the American comedian Raymond Hitchcock (1865-1925) in the revue Hitchy-Koo at the Globe Theatre, New York in 1918. He made his New York debut in 1890, reaching star status in 1903. He first appeared in the UK at Blackpool Grand in 1916 in the leading role in Mr Manhattan, which transferred to the Prince of Wales in London the same year. He later returned to London to appear in Hullo, America! at the Hippodrome in 1919.
