Al Frueh (1880-1968) was an American cartoonist and caricaturist for The New Yorker magazine from 1925 to 1962. This print forms part of a portfolio of caricatures, Stage Folk: A Book of Caricatures by Frueh, published by Lieber & Lewis in 1922. It was exhibited at the Theatre Museum in Theatre Caricatures by Al Frueh: West End Meets Broadway, in 1990.
This print shows the singer Fritzi Scheff (1879-1954), and is said to have been the print that made Al Frueh's name. Frueh created this print whilst Scheff was touring St Louis in Mlle Modiste during 1907. It soon appeared in the St Louis Post-Despatch, after which Frueh reported that Scheff refused to appear on stage saying that the print infuriated her so.
