Place of origin

Costume design by Peter Cazalet for a guest in Peter Darrell’s ballet Francesca (1967) for Western Theatre Ballet signed Cazalet and annotated ‘Francesca Feb 67 Guest Saunders’. The design shows a fashionable woman in a floral puffed culottes - sleeveless dress with low neckline. Her hair is swept up into a high, elaborate headdress and she wears large hoped ear rings.

Francesca was choreographed by Peter Darrell at short notice for Western Theatre Ballet to Albert Roussel’s Petite Suite for Orchestra and it was premiered at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, on 2 February 1967. In Francesca Darrell returned to one his favourite themes, Vampires. A relatively short-lived ballet the critics were unanimous in their admiration for the chic, fanciful clothes and hair styles which showed a witty contemporary elegance. This costume was designed for Carolyn Sanders
