Manilla (or bracelet) About 1600-1800 or later Manillas were a standard currency in West Africa long before Portuguese merchants began trading them from the 1470s. Millions were then made in Europe for export to Africa. Europeans used manillas as currency to enslave African people. Manillas were also traded for pepper, cloth and ivory.
