Kimono

ca.1960 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This kimono was presented to a member of the British royal family by a princess of the Japanese imperial family in the early 1960s. The bold, asymmetric motifs recall famous kimono designs of the 17th century. The technical sophistication, lavish use of applied gold leaf, and chrysanthemums and paulownia motifs - emblems of the Japanese Imperial family and government respectively – are entirely appropriate for such an important diplomatic gift.
