The singer, dancer and actress Ann Barry (1734-1801) - otherwise known as Mrs. Dancer and later as Mrs. Crawford, first acted Mariamne in London in Elijah Fenton's play Herod and Mariamne (after Samuel Pordage) at Drury Lane Theatre on 20th March 1770. Herod was played by the Irish actor Spranger Barry (1719-1777). Ann Barry was Spranger Barry's second wife whom he married in 1768.
Mariamne I (supposedly died 29BC), and also called Mariamne the Hasmonean, was said to have been known as a great beauty. She was a Hasmonean princess and the second wife of Herod the Great. Her mother, Alexandra, is said to have arranged for her betrothal to Herod in 41BC Mariamne's parents agreed a Ketubah or Jewish marriage ceremony with Herod.
