Psyche
About 1908–19
Wood first displayed Psyche, an allegorical figure who represents the soul, as a plaster work at the Royal Academy in 1908. Indebted to Italian Renaissance and contemporary French sculpture, its expressive naturalism is characteristic of the so-called New Sculpture, the dominant style in British sculpture around 1880–1910.
