The Feast of Herod

Drawing
circa 1777-1783 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

James Barry's political and intellectual views were quite controversial, and had made him a few enemies: he was the only artist ever expelled from the Royal Academy. This drawing of the Feast of Herod, a biblical episode of martyrdom and betrayal, shows Salome carrying Saint John the Baptist's head on a tray. It may have had a particular meaning for Barry, whose expulsion from the Royal Academy occurred around the same time.
