Burse

1390-1420 (made)

On both sides, the Coronation of the Virgin. One side largely intact with triangular insertions at the bottom left and right corners, apparently from another part of the same piece. The other side composed of a number of fragments, assembled to fit the square shape of the burse. On the first side, the gold thread is underside couched, but very losely worked. On the second side, the gold on the figures is surface-couched (some underside couching in background). The pose of the figures is slightly different on the two sides, Christ's in particular. Lined with plain linen that has been pieced and stained. Edges bound with striped linen braid crudely attached.

in one case beneath a double ogee arch with vaults and large crockets. The gold backgrounds are worked with lozenge diaper patterns.
