Macmillan's History Class Pictures

Print
1951 (published)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This set of History Class Pictures was produced by educational publishers Macmillan in 1951. It features sixty full colour illustrations, tracing Medieval history from the Norman invasion to the Renaissance. Drawn by a range of artists, the images make reference to famous paintings and prints, but reinterpreted in a bright and often humorous style meant to engage children. The grand narrative view they offer of history is punctuated by scenes of everyday life, of princes and peasants and work and play.
