The Virgin and Child was a popular focus for religious devotion. Here the infant Christ raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing. The original location of this relief is unknown but a similar example can be seen in the sacristy of the church of the Carmine in Pavia.

Marble roundel depicting the Virgin and Child, in the style of Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, Lombard ca. 1500
Physical description
Circular relief in marble. The Virigin is represented in three-quarter length on a flat background. Her elbows are thrust outwards to either side and are covered with her veil. She looks towards the Christ child, whom she holds with both hands. The child holds the end of the Virgin's girdle in his left hand, and his right hand is raised in benediction. His feet rest on the perimeter of the relief.

The relief is related in style to a Coronation of the Virgin by Amadeo in the sacristy of the Carmine at Pavia and is probably the work of a pupil.
