Towards the end of his life, Constable collaborated with the talented engraver David Lucas. Together they created a series of richly tonal mezzotints reproducing many of Constable's most important pictures; the subjects depicted range from the homely to the sublime. First published at his own expense in 1830, with the title 'Various Subject of Landscape, characteristics of English Scenery', the portfolio reveals Constable's desire to work in a 'natural' manner, but at the same time to create idealised images of his beloved native landscape. Lucas added several new subjects to the edition of 1845.
