This cast was taken from the original marble relief of the Virgin and Child by Mino da Fiesole now in the Museo Nazionale (Bargello), Florence. The marble was gilded to highlight certain details, such as the Virgin's belt and the haloes. Here the warm human relationship between mother and child can be seen, echoing paintings of similar subjects made in Florence at this date, such as the works of Botticelli and Filippo Lippi.
