Worzel Gummidge is a British children’s character that was created for a book by Barbara Todd in 1936. It was later adapted for the radio appearing on Children’s hour and then for television in 1979. The character was played by the actor Jon Pertwee. Worzel Gummidge was a scarecrow that could come to life, and he had interchangeable heads he could wear, each with its own ability to cope with different situations.

Worzel Gummidge doll, boxed, a scarecrow character toy, 1983.
Physical description
The figure is fully dressed wearing brown trousers and matching jacket, it has a number of patches on it and the cuffs have a beige wool frill intimating straw. He wears a checked shirt underneath, a red with white polka dots handkerchief in the top pocket, a beige felt scarf and hat. The doll has a cloth body and a plastic head, and nylon blonde wig. The box is made of card with a printed sleeve and a display window on the front.

Object history
The doll was a gift from the daughter of the donor to his wife. When their eldest grandson was three years old, he has been to stay with his grandparents on the weekends. One particular morning he came into their bedroom looked at his grandmother with her ginger hair all over the place pointed at her and said you are Worzel Gummidge and ever since then she was known as Granny Worzel.
