This iconic England 1966 world cup T-shirt was given to, and reluctantly worn by a boy called Richard. Object history | This iconic England 1966 world cup T-shirt was given to, and reluctantly worn by the brother of the donor, Richard Peter McIntyre (born 1956). The family were Scottish, living in Dunbar, East Lothian but had English relatives who bought Richard this T-shirt. Caroline recalls her brother who was loyal to his Scottish heritage, being furious at having to wear the shirt of another country, and, despite England winning 4-2, he gleefully cheered for West Germany during the final in 1966. The T-shirt is part of a larger gift which ranges in size and age group from the donor Caroline McIntyre (b.20/02/1954) (and a couple of items from her brother) throughout her childhood up to the age of about 14. This is a rare opportunity to follow the changing size, fashions and clothing choices (either her own or those chosen for her) of one individual throughout their childhood of the mid 1950s-1960s including those clothes worn for every day as well as those saved for best. |
