Poltrona di Proust

Armchair
1978 (made), 1981 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The Proust chair is a postmodern bricolage by Alessandro Mendini. It takes the form of Baroque furniture and decoration from Pointillist painting with a title from literature. The hand-painted decoration was designed by projecting a slide of a Paul Signac painting on to the surface, and the dots were painted directly on to the furniture. It is a typically postmodern method of design, relying on appropriation in arranging existing forms, images and codes into new combinations.
