This poster advertises a New York newspaper, The Journal. Its designer, the English-born painter and illustrator Louis Rhead, studied in Paris with Boulanger, and later with Legros and Delou, and in England with Poynter and Leighton. He moved to America in 1883, though continuing to visit Paris, where he was influenced by Grasset, whom he met in 1894.
