Most of Hardy's paintings are scenes of cottage life. He exhibited ninety-three of them at the Royal Academy between 1851 and 1898. This painting of a cottage interior is fairly unusual in not including any figures, apart from a sleeping cat. Indeed, it was once catalogued, misleadingly, as a 'still-life'.

This painting may have been exhibited at the RA in 1853 as An Interior (270); there is some confusion as to whether the work exhibited was this painting or F.16 (Sunday Afternoon). According to the artist's statement in 1907, both of these works were painted in the neighbourhood of Snell's Wood, near Chenies, Buckinghamshire. |
