L'Assiette au Beurre, a satirical journal, published 594 issues from March 1901 to October, 1912. The journal is composed entirely of drawings (approximately 16 per issue) and contains more than 10,000 images in black and white and colour. More than 220 illustrators and 73 authors interpreted current events. The main subjects covered were the middle class, employers, priests, judges, non-commissioned officers and the police. About half of the collection consists of political satire, and the other half differs little from the themes treated in other illustrated journals of the time.
