Jules Chéret (1836-1932) is known as the Maître de l'Affiche, or the 'Father of the poster'.This is primarily due to his groundbreaking developments in the colour lithographic process, but can also be attributed to his prolific output and ostentatious style: Chéret was capable of rendering even the most banal of subjects sensational.
This poster depicts the celebrated Parisian dancer, Loie Fuller, performing on stage at the Folies-Bergère; a visual evocation of movement and sensuality is rendered through the use of her billowing and colourful, yet diaphonous, skirts.

Loïe Fuller chose Chéret to design the poster for her début at the Folies-Bergère. He skilfully captured the image of the American star suspended in one of her light-and-movement dances, and printed the poster in four different colour combinations, probably to give an impression of the four dances she performed on this occasion: the Serpent Dance, Violet Dance, Butterfly Dance and White Dance.(1987-2006) |
