Scalextric Velodrome Cycling Set

Racing Game

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This Velodrome Cycling Set is a special edition of the familiar Scalextric racing game, produced as merchandising for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Scalextric were first produced in the late 1950s. Kits typically included enough track to make a complete circuit, and two miniature models of popular vehicles. Additional vehicles could be collected, and tracks from different sets joined together. In the late 1990s, Micro Scalextric was a new, smaller version of the racing game, produced at 1/64 scale.

The choice of a cycling version of this micro Scalextric game may have been inspired by the success of the British cycling team at Beijing in 2008, and the building of a new Velodrome in London. Hornby Hobbies Ltd. bought a license to produce the merchandise for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and for Team GB. They promoted many special Olympic editions of games, toys, and collectibles.
