This cartoon was specially commissioned for the winter 2011 edition of the V&A Magazine, to accompany an article by Julius Bryant written in connection with the exhibition Private Eye: the first 50 years, 18 October- 8 January. The artist kindly offered to donate the original drawing to the collection.
Richard Jolley has been a regular contributor to Private Eye since 1990, and he also contributes to numerous other magazines and newspapers including the Oldie, the Spectator, Prospect and the Mail on Sunday. This drawing joins the V&A's large and distinguished collection of caricatures, which includes works by Hogarth, Rowlandson, Gillray, Cruikshank, John Leech, Linley Sambourne, Bateman, Osbert Lancaster, David Low and Fougasse.
