Place of origin

This 17th-century Dutch portrait has been attributed to numerous artists since its arrival at the V&A. When it first entered the collection, it was described as the work of noted portraitist Bartholomeus van der Helst. Subsequently, it has been attributed to Abraham van den Tempel, Jan van Hemert and Anthonie Palamedes, although none of these is particularly convincing. The costume suggests a date of around 1650.

Object history
Bequeathed by John Forster, 1876. The Forster Collection catalogue (1893) describes this painting as the work of Bartholomeus van der Helst; subsequent attributions to van den Tempel, Jan van Hemert and A. Palamedes have been dismissed by C. M. Kauffmann.
Historical context
The costume suggests a date of around 1650.
Production
Attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst in the Forster Collection catalogue (1893), this picture has subsequently been attributed to van de Temple and, more recently, to Jan van Hemert and A. Palamedes. C. M. Kauffmann finds none of these attributions convincing, and notes that the costume suggests a date of around 1650.
