John R Brown worked as a wallpaper designer for Leyland Paint & Wallpapers in East Africa, where he produced a number of designs with African themes, including one for the reception area of the Treetops Hotel in Kenya, to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. (She was staying at the hotel in February 1952 when she received the news of her father’s death.) Other papers designed by Brown and included in the gift to the V&A were produced by Paragon Wallpapers, Darwen, Lancashire. Two of the designs (for a nursery paper and for an Art Nouveau-style wallpaper) were never produced.
