William Mulready was well-known for his nude studies. Having studied at the Royal Academy at the very beginning of the nineteenth century, he continued assiduously to attend the Life Class into old age. His highly refined drawings, which are remarkable for their subtle imitation of the tones and contours of flesh with black and red chalk, represent the summit of the nineteenth-century academic technique.
