Little is currently known about Charles Gladstone (active 1890s). However, his photographs of Rouen Cathedral: North West Porch and Rouen Cathedral: South East are fine examples of the platinum print process and are accomplished examples of artistic architectural photography of the late 19th and early 20th century. Platinum printing for photographs of ecclesiastical architecture was made fashionable at this time by the foremost photographer of this subject, Frederick Evans. Evans’s works are in the V&A collection and Gladstone’s photographs make a useful comparison with them to show his influence.
