POSTER FOR THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE
1904
From 1874 until 1905 magicians John Nevil Maskelyne and George Cooke presented magic shows at their theatre on the first floor of London’s Egyptian Hall, earning the Piccadilly establishment the name ‘England’s Home of Mystery’. The Philosopher’s Stone, a popular 40-minute play by Maskelyne’s eldest son Nevil, featured explosive special effects, levitations and dozens of illusions, some sensationally depicted in this poster.
