Carl Haag, a German-born travel artist, painted this watercolour in Cairo, Egypt, at the end of 1858. During a journey across the desert from Cairo to Suez, which he undertook with Frederick Goodall, Haag painted many watercolours (another example is in the V&A, 408-1891). The word 'Fellah' identifies the ordinary people of Egypt who were not slaves.
