Frieze
This appears to be a plaster cast of a portion of the drum frieze of the Amaravati Stupa. The original is in the British Museum, numbers 1860,0712.1 and 1880,0709.77.
A photograph of this with seven other fragments is held in the V&A's Word and Image Department (collection code PDP) numbered 67525 and described as fragments of friezes in the inner enclosure of Amaravati. It is one of a series of photographs by W. Griggs published in James Fergusson's 'Tree and Serpent Worship' (London, 1868).

Production | It was tentatively suggested that this was one of the small number casts of the Sanchi stupa held at the V&A, but it appears to be a cast of a fragment of the Amaravati stupa in the British Museum's collection. |
