Historical context | General Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst (1755-1857) was prominent in the 1806 to 1807 campaign against Napoleon, and subsequently headed the commission to reform the Prussian military system. Rauch was regarded as the greatest German sculptor after Schadow. |
