Place of origin

This fashion design shows a woman wearing a caramel and black two-piece dress and jacket ensemble with a fitted Basque-jacket, which is a jacket worn over a skirt with short skirt-like extensions over the waist, designed by Marjorie Field for the haute couture firm Field Rhoades which was registered in the London street directories at 77, South Audley Street, London W1 for the years 1948 to 1949. The design is coupled with a typewritten description of the dress, detailing the thin wool, which was to be fully lined, out of which it is intended to be made, available colours, size suitability and price. The design was available in caramel/black, French blue/navy, laurel green/brown or light navy/black combination. On the design, pencil shading and lines have been applied over the ensemble to show the silhouettes and details of the close-fitting jacket and the folds on the skirt. A smaller pencil sketch to the left show the bodice of the dress and the belt. Another sketch below shows the back of the dress. The design would have been used as a presentation drawing and forms part of an album of 12 designs with accompanying descriptions from which the client could choose what she wanted to have made.
