This bowl was purchased from the artist for £71 10s 10d. Thesmar united his training as a painter with his fascination with chemistry when he began to execute cloisonné enamels for Barbedienne. He became a Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur in the year in which this bowl was made. In 1912 Henri Bouilhet described him as not only in the first rank of enamellers, but as the leader.

Physical description | Cup of translucent enamel, "email de plique a jour", the design is outlined by gold cloisons and consists of carnations springing from vertical stems in light blue, green, yellow and white on a dark blue ground; the rim is ornamneted with a row of heart shaped devices enclosing leaves and the bottom bears the double monogram FT and the date for 1893. |
