'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'
The scene depicts Vulcan forging weapons for Aeneas, the founder of Rome, at the request of Venus, his mother. The classical tradition survived relatively unaltered at the Berlin factory because of the persisting influence of the neo-classical architect, Schinkel, and his pupils; it was criticised at the 1855 and 1867 Paris exhibitions. This vase is neo-classical in form and subject, but the handles, with spiky, acanthus-winged griffons are borrowed from Renaissance grotesques. A vase of the same shape but with different decoration was shown at the Paris 1867 Exhibition.
