'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'

In 1884, by accident and rarely repeated with success, an effect was achieved at the Rookwood pottery in which streaks of golden crystals appeared embedded within the glaze. Called 'Tiger Eye', Rookwood technicians spent years trying to standardize it. This vase, a specially thrown piece, is probably one attempt: it was purchased from Siegfried Bing's shop, L'Art Nouveau. The dragon ornament reflects lingering Japanese influence reinforced at Rookwood by the employment of Japanese designers such as Kataro Shirayamadami. Valentien ran the Rookwood decorating department from 1881 to 1905.
