The donor, Robert Almström, was Rörstrand's technical director, and so this piece may be seen as one of which the factory was particularly proud. This type of decoration in white enamel on a dark blue ground emulated, in a modified and much simplified manner, Limoges enamels of the 1500s. It had been a popular standard with porcelain factories such as Sèvres, Worcester and Minton since the mid 1850s.
