9 COSTUME DESIGN FOR HAMLET 1934 Motley (sisters Margaret and Sophia Harris, and their friend Elizabeth Montgomery) designed sets and costumes for many of John Gielgud’s productions in the 1930s. The costumes for Gielgud’s Hamlet were made of scenery canvas, hand-sprayed with dyes and metallic pigments. The Court wore dark colours, and Claudius’s costume emphasised his physical stature and suggested wealth and power.
