This is the original box which would have been bought with the commemorative Russian brooch celebrating 100 years of the first permanent circus building in St. Petersburg, the Circus on Fontanka. The circus was built by the Italian circus performer Gaetano Ciniselli, designed by the architect V.A. Kenelon and opened on 26 December 1877.
