'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' The designer Alexandre-Paul Avisse (active 1848-1884) is an obscure figure. Taxile Maximin Doat, one of the two decorators, was by contrast an important figure in technical developments at Sèvres, where he started in 1877. This vase (a 'vase potiche AB', from its oriental form and the initials of Alexandre Brongniart, director until 1847) is thus an early masterpiece of Taxile Maximin Doat's pâte-sur-pâte technique, which involved the application of successive thin layers of slip (liquid clay), a slow and costly process reserved for exceptional pieces.(1987-2006)

This type of vase is known as a 'vase potiche AB', from its oriental form and the initials of Alexandre Brongniart, director until 1847. It is an early masterpiece of Taxile Maximin Doat's pâte-sur-pâte technique, which involved the application of successive thin layers of slip (liquid clay), a slow and costly process reserved for exceptional pieces.
