Honma Kazue (b.1953) is one of a group of Japanese basket-makers led by the influential Sekijima Hisako (b.1944) who, since the early 1980s, have embarked on a journey of often radical experimentation that has set them aside from Japan's traditional basket-making fraternity. Since the mid-1990s Honma has established a considerable reputation for herself through an active programme of exhibitions in Japan and the USA.
This piece was made for and bought from the Crafts Council's COLLECT art fair held at the V&A in 2004. It complements three baskets by Sekijima Hisako already in the collection.
