Fanciful and elabrate cornucopias were quite often used as decoration on chintz hangings for the western market in the mid-18th century. This piece has a quirky and light-hearted air, with its open field and unusual border design of feathery leaves, tiny hillocks and curious edging motif of wine-glasses or trees.

Palampore of painted and dyed cotton chintz, Coromandel Coast, ca. 1750-1775
Physical description
Large rectangular palampore (wall-hanging or bed-cover) of painted and dyed cotton chintz. The field has four large floral cornucopias in the corners pointing towards the centre, where a fifth cornucopia (in the centre) is surrounded by a leafy chain arranged in lobes. The border has a repeating design of stylised tree and floral elements.
