Palampore

ca. 1740-1750 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The central motif of this large chintz hanging or bed-cover shows the pelican in her piety, in which the mother pelican pecks blood from her breast to feed her chicks. This scene is symbolic of Christ feeding his flock with his blood. European-style heraldic motifs are used in the centre and at the corners of the field: a sphinx and a seated lion in the centre, and greyhounds in the corners. The main border has a design of staggered clumps of earth and flowers with animals on them, separated by birds and butterflies.
