Palampore

ca. 1750-1780 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The central motif of this hanging, of a female figure adjusting her hair-pin while looking in a mirror, is taken from Chinese painting or prints of the 18th century, such as those showing the Twelve Beauties or concubines. The rest of the design is typical of Indian motifs for the western market, although the craggy mounds from which the trees spring are inhabited by unusually lively animals.
