19th century bag face

WARP: white wool; Z2S; 25 threads per inch (97 per dm).

WEFT: light brown wool; Z spun, unplied; 2 parallel threads per shoot; 2 shoots after every row of knot; 23 knots per inch (89 per dm).

PILE: wool; 8 colours: dark red, red, orange, dark green, dark blue, blue, brown, white; asymmetrical knot open to the right and tied around 2 threads; 287 knots per sq. inch (4316 per sq. dm).

SIDE FINISH: 2 cords overcase with dark red wool.

END FINISH: lower: 3.5 cms. plain weave beginning with red woollen weft, but mostly cream. Upper: plain weave with red weft, turned over; a double plait of dark brown wool is sewn along the fold and extends at one side.

DESIGN: Field: dark red ground with two bands each of three hooked and stepped guls, one above the other. Each gul has a red ground; in the centre is a multi-coloured star within a white horned cruciform. The centre band has two lozenge arrangements of eight blue-outlined, small rectangles framing white stars. The centre of the rectangle is a multi-coloured star within an orange horned cruciform. Similar upper and lower bands are partially evident.
Main border: rectangles with contrasting star-like motifs; in the upper and lower bands the rectangles are separated by narrow blocks of red; down the sides the blocks are separated by multi-coloured bands.
Inner and outer borders: identical and on a red ground, they awre alternating white and orange flowerheads outlined in dark blue.
Outermost border: blue line with protruding blue triangles filled in alternating orange and red (only orange in top border). On the sides dark green zigzag outlines the triangles. Top and bottom: this zigzag becomes a series of horned triangles.
Apron: 18.5 cms. of pile with dark red ground diagonal rows of diagonally alternating dark green and dark blue sprigs with white flowers. The sprigs are diagonally filled with red or orange. Eleven horizontal rows. Diagonal lines rise to the right.
