This is an amulet case or 'ga'u' that was used to contain rolled prayers and blessed or holy objects believed to protect the wearer from evil. Such boxes were worn suspended on a strap or sash across the shoulder or around the neck when travelling.

Ga'u, hammered silver, with chased and repoussé facing, contains image of Buddha, E.Tibet, 19th century.
Physical description
Ga'u made of hammered silver, with chased and repoussé facing. Rectangular box with ogival top. In the middle of the front is a balconied window. The rest of the surface is filled with a representation of the Eight Buddhist Emblems amid foliage, and within a Tamdin head and hands. The back is ornamented with an inscription in Lantsa script. At each side is a pair of suspending loops. The box contains a gilt image of the Dhyani Buddha Akshobhya, seated on a lotus-throne, wrapped in in silk and cotton fabrics and twisted cords.
