Title | Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh (generic title) |
Materials and techniques | Painted in opaque watercolour on paper |
Brief description | Painting, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh on horseback, opaque watercolour on paper, Rajasthan (Jaipur or Amber), early 18th century |
Physical description | Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, portrait of the young Jai Singh on a grey horse, with five attendants on foot. The young maharaja is seated on a prancing horse. A morchhal-bearer and standard-bearer walk behind him, and attendants carrying a spear, a bow and quiver and a bag (possibly for swords) walk in front. Jai Singh II was the founder (in 1728) of the city of Jaipur. As he appears only about 17 years old in this picture, it can be dated to about 1710, when the capital was still at Amber, which is probably where the picture was painted. |
