Trunk on Stand

1666 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Trunk with flat bottom and inset, hinged lid, clad in dark leather on the front, sides and lid, with floral motifs worked in decorative brass studding, with the initials and date 16KH66. Fitted with a brass hasp lock, and on both sides with a cast bail handle on star back-plates. Fixed into a modern oak plinth (stained dark), with fluted moulding and resting on reeded block feet.

The structure of softwood planks, with the front and back nailed onto the sides, and an internal flange fitted to the front and sides beneath the lid. The top of the chest consists of a fixed back section with short sides, to which the lifting part is hinged. The lifting part of the lid is formed from 3 planks (grained side to side) with a batten nailed to the underside (running front to back), and strips nailed to the front and sides.

The interior is roughly hewn pine, although some traces of lining paper remain. The top is covered with a continuois piece of hide. The back is not leather covered although the wood has been scoured suggesting that it was originally intended to be covered, but there is no evidence of decorative nail holes on the back, which would probably have been plain.

Object history
On loan to the National Trust at Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk from 1955-2016

Wood & nail studded chest, donated by Mrs C E Allen

Notes from RP 31/4310. Condition upon acquisition: "Edges cracked and frayed".

Mr & Mrs Allen had been benefactors of the V & A since 1914. Mr Allen had at that time already made a will bequeathing a number of items to the museum after his & his wife's deaths. In 1931 Mr Allen died and Mrs Allen sold "Avalon" to move into a service flat. She decided to dispose of certain items on the bequest list for which she had no further use (evidently they had no children).

It seems that Mr Allen built up his collection of antiques earlier in his life. There are no details of provenance and no indication as to whether any were inherited family pieces although the absence of such indication rather implies that they were not inherited. (one of the items given by Mrs Allen during her lifetime was a garment described as having been with an ancestor of hers. Possibly therefore if other items had been inherited the Allens might have mentioned this).

Mrs Allen died in 1938.
