This set of mounted trays show some of the different processes involved in the manufacture of Japanese cloisonné enamels. They were used as an illustration for anyone who was interested in the cloisonné technique and sometimes appeared at exhibitions. Running from left to right and from top row to bottom row they range from the original application of the wires through various further applications of enamels to the final polished item.

The trays are of copper with copper wire delineating the pattern of a single rose. The tray edges (Japanese: ‘fukurin’) are also of copper and may once have been gilded. The top panel shows some of the different colours of enamels which were available to the cloisonné maker.
