This sample of felted paper curtain material was produced by Pavy, Pretto and Co. Eugène Pavy took out a patent in 1853 for improvements in the production of fabrics whereby clothing, curtains, carpets and so on could be produced at a low cost. The brightly coloured pattern of imaginary flowers. and undulating stems is the product of that new technology, and is usually known as the ‘Tree of Life’. It is derived from traditional Indian textile patterns.
